Why had God placed this life in front of me? To start with, the Lord never gives you more than you can handle.
I would be born to parents Joyce and Denny Grant, married at ages 17 and 23. It was a match made by way of Denny's maternal aunt, Kitty. In 1956 she was my mother's roommate in Camarillo, a California insane asylum. This marriage was a slice of hell, giving birth to three children. Joyce would kill her second-born, Jimmy, followed by her hanging me as a two-year-old, three years later.
Where does one's life go from there? What were the reasons for these events - or those that followed, many of which my mind blacked out? What was God's plan? What would I learn? When would I begin to remember...?

Family of Distorted Minds A True Story (Audible Audio Edition) Deborah J Rose Risa Pappas Wise Media Group Books Reviews
This book is pretty open and raw. It is at times hard to read, knowing that it is a true story. It's not going to be for everyone simply due to the subjects of abuse, rape and extreme neglect. I received a copy of Family of Distorted Minds at no cost in order to review and this was a tough read, but there seemed to be a thread of hope running through.
I can only imagine how hard it must have been to not only revisit the most horrible moments of your life, but then to write about those moments and put them out there for others to dissect. Ms. Rose is incredibly courageous in doing that. This story takes you back to the roots of Deborah's grandparents and the roots of the dysfunction in her family. It is a disturbing and even devastating journey to read aobut people that treated each other so badly, even as expendable. There didn't seem to be any shame in them and their own selfish desires were all that mattered to them. And so this is the legacy that was passed down to their children and ulitmately dumped onto their grandchldren who were left to to deal with it largely on their own. The detail with which the author recounts the details of her abuse is pretty graphic. As I read, there were times I just had to slide my bookmark in between the pages and stop reading. It is a lot to take in and process. I found parts of this absolutely horrifying. It's horrifying for many reasons. That a mother would treat her own child so badly, that a father would abuse his own children, that a grandmother would bury the truth and allow the abuse to continue, that there was no one to put a stop to the abuse for decades.
There are a lot of players in this story and at the beginning I had a little trouble keeping it straight as to who was who and their connection to Deborah. Another reason this is a little difficult to read is the structure of the book. It's not broken up into traditional chapters so even when it is getting a bit graphic or your mind needs a break, you don't really find a good place to pause. You can't just read a few more pages and pause at the next chapter. It is also not your typical "spit and polished" story from a big time author, but it is real. It's in Deborah's voice. There does seem to be lots of repitition and some of the words and phrasing seems more like they have come from a therapist than the author herself. I did find the claims of remembering things from when she was two years old, a little unbelievable. I could understand if it had been put forth as something she was told had happened to her, but to have actually remembered those events and with such vivid detail, seems, well a stretch. The one thing I felt was lacking was emotion. The author tells the facts of these events with great detail and as horrifying as some of those events are, it still seems she is detached from them in her writing about them. At the same time, as I thought about the nature of those events I could understand why she would become detached and not emotionally invested because it could become all consuming. In a lot of ways detaching from it all, is probably what kept her going and kept her alive. In the end, even as she describes having no hope for most of her life, I think hope was always there, like a thin thread that kept her head above water when she was ready to drown. Hope seems to have held her hand silently and led her out of the abyss. In the end, even with some flaws, this is truly a story of survival, a story of how a life that started out so wrong from it's very beginning, found hope and perhaps some peace. There is a really compelling story in there that I believe with the help of an editor to help provide structure, could make this book something of a beacon to other abuse victims and survivors.
I received this story on the basis of given an honest review. Here goes . . .
Truly, this book was a very sad and depressing story to read. It spoke to the abuse, rape, destruction, and wickedness that‘s brought upon one’s life . . . particularly that of a child. I consider our children a gift from God. They are God’s Little Angels and HE has entrusted us to nurture, protect, and care for them, among many other things. I’ve always stated that “Life is so full of stuff the good, the bad, and the ugly.” And this story demonstrates a lot of that ugliness life can dish up and out.
I’m sure it took a great deal of memories and emotions (for the author) to bring this story to the forefront. Recalling her baby and teen years (even adulthood) of abuse in any form, it had to be very devastating and heartbreaking experience. After reading her story (of course, with some difficulty), I went back to see who the publisher was. Unfortunately, their name was not identified in this book. I’ve indicated the difficulty of it because this story lacked professional editing and creative structure. Firstly, the break in chapters just way too long (for me anyway). It appeared as though, the first chapter was never going to end. Secondly, with all of the powerful emotions bouncing off the pages, there should have been more “show me moments,” versus “tell me ones.” Thirdly, more description of characters and scenes . . . would have placed me inside her journey, I’m sure. A story of this magnitude presents a powerful impact when laid out descriptively.
Sure, I found it amazing how the author recalled precise details of what occurred with her, beginning at the age of two . . . detail to detail. Perhaps, it should have been laid out a little differently as the details unfolded, to make for a more realistic scene.
My heart goes out to this author for all she had to endure. There should be nothing like a mother’s love to ease the pain of her child’s existence. For sure, this author was deprived of such love. Overall, I’m appreciative to this author for sharing her life’s journey. It simply shows how some people are undeserving of becoming a parent. Sharing is about caring!
I picked a 5 because of her courage to tell all, in great pain. I too was abused in all ways.
